OPT 개요

Optional Practical Training(OPT)는 미국내에서 1년 이상 수학 후 준학사, 학사 또는 석사학위를 취득한 외국 국적 유학생(F-1 학생)에게 각 학위 취득별로 12개월~36개월(12개월 이상의 OPT는 STEM 전공 학사/석사 학위 취득자에게만 제공됨)간 해당 학위 전공과 직접적으로 연관된 고용주 회사 업무 분야에 취업을 허용하는 제도입니다.
모든 OPT는 해당 학생의 전공분야와 직접 관련이 있어야 하고 자격을 갖춘 학생들은 학업 완료 전(Pre-Completion) OPT 또는 및 학업 완료 후(Post-Completion) OPT를 12 개월까지 신청할 수 있습니다.

- 학업 완료 전 OPT를 승인받아 사용한 경우에 학업 완료 후 OPT로 사용할 수 있는 총 기간에서 공제됩니다.

OPT 종류

학업 완료 전 OPT(Pre-Completion OPT)

미국 이민국에 F-1 학생 등록이 인증된 2년제 또는 4년제 대학, 전문교육기관 및 실용교육기관에서 1년간 정규 full-time으로 등록한 경우 사전 고용 승인을 받아 학업 완료 전 OPT에 참여 가능

- 학업기간동안에는 파트타임(주당 20시간 이하)으로 일할 수 있으며 방학 기간 동안에는 full-time 근무도 가능

학업 완료 후 OPT(Post-Completion OPT)

학위 취득 후 OPT에 참여하는 유형으로 학업을 마친 후 파트타임(주당 20시간 이하) 또는 풀타임으로 일할 수 있음

- 학업 완료 전 OPT에 참여한 경우, 미국 이민국은 학업 완료 후 OPT 승인 기간에서 학업 완료 전 진행된 OPT 해당 시간을 공제 함
- 예를 들어 학업 완료 전 OPT에 10개월 동안 참여한 경우 학업 완료 후 OPT는 최대 2개월까지 가능

STEM전공 OPT 취업 연장(STEM OPT Extension)

과학, 기술, 공학 및 수학(STEM 전공)의 특정 분야에서 학사 또는 석사학위를 취득한 경우 최초 12개월 OPT 기간에 더하여 24개월의 기간을 추가로 OPT 고용 승인 연장 신청 가능
